Why I made it
«Donde florecen los secretos», which means Where Secrets Bloom, is Nacarid Portal's novel, and adapting it means honouring a story she has already built with care: two young women from rival crowns, one sent to destroy the other, who discover that love does not prevent betrayal. My role is to give her book its complete visual life, turning every chapter into images that keep her world, her characters and her open ending intact.
The world
The Five Forgotten Kingdoms are secret nations that rule the world from the shadows, and every year their final-year students face the Tournament of Purification, a chain of trials that fewer than one in ten survive. Between the cliffside castle of Vaerthall and the training grounds of Kaer Thalion, the series moves through royal pacts, poisonous flowers and an order older than the kingdoms, told in one-minute vertical chapters.
The characters
Roma Valtieri
Heir of Valteira, twenty. She arrives at Vaerthall as the betrothed of the Blackwood heir with a secret mission from her mother, Queen Nyxtera: befriend Milenka, uncover her secret and destroy her.
Milenka Blackwood
Youngest daughter of King Aldros, eighteen. The most brilliant mind on the planet, ill and kept in a tower for most of her life, she has learned that everything she loves ends up destroyed.
Malik Blackwood
Heir of the Blackwoods. Promised to Roma to secure the Valtieri army, he is the brother whose cruelty towards his sister hides a purpose no one sees coming.
